[ Singles & Dating ] Open Question : Why are my parents acting like this?! Please HELP ME!!!!:(?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

I'm really sorry its long, I wanted to get everything out... :/ Please read though:/ So my boyfriend came over on Monday because we had no school. We hung out with my family for the majority of the time and then after we ate dinner we helped clean up everything and put away stuff, and then we went to my bedroom. The door was open. Everyone was home. It was daylight in my room. And we were just sitting on my bed kissing and talking. We wanted to have a little alone time to ourselves without everyone in my house hearing what we want to talk about, or seeing us kiss. So then yesterday my dad comes home from work and the first thing he says to me is, "Hey the next time Justin comes over can you please not go into your room? I don't want another grandchild any time soon." WTH!?!? We were only kissing, we weren't doing anything else! My sister is only 17 and she just had a baby, and they think just because I'm saying the same stuff that she did like I won't have sex that I will end up having sex!! First of all, why the hell would I do it (if i was going to, which im not till im MARRIED) in my house with the freakin' door open while everyone is home?? I respected their rule of no closing the door and THAT'S IT! they told me I could! And Justin has been over a few times and we've gone into my room every single time and they haven't said anything until just yesterday?! And we never get any alone time unless he comes over because we hardly ever see each other at school, only at the beginning of the day and at the end. I'm not going to have sex. I already have my mind set on not doing it until I am married. But EVERYONE keeps telling me that "ohh i said the same thing but look at me I had sex" WTH im not you!! I am me! And my parents keep comparing me and Justin to my sister and her boyfriend!!! I keep telling them that he won't do that to this family, and he's even promised me he won't do that to my family, but they keep saying "Oh thats what Anthony did and look at him and your sister." WHY DO THEY KEEP COMPARING ME TO MY SISTER?!!? It's really pissing me off!! I want to cry because no one is listening to me and all i want to do is spend some time with my boyfriend. And my parents keep treating me like I've dis-earned their trust. I haven't dont ANYTHING that would make them not trust me or Justin. We both have never smoked, we haven't had sex, we don't drink. So why are they keeping me on a leash and my sister isn't?!?! She is the one that made that mistake and got pregnant not me. It makes me soo mad.... What do I do?!! Please help me!!! (btw I am 16 and he is 17)

[ Singles & Dating ] Open Question : What does my ex want?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

We broke up 5 months ago and it was very awkward for us in the first few weeks, because we are in the same school and we have mutual friends. But then it got better, we started to say 'Hi' to each other, but nothing else. And lately, he's trying to talk to me a lot. If I'm around him, he always says something (e.g. last week he said 'You are beautiful today'), anyway, he always finds something to say to get my attention. Two weeks ago we were on a party with some of our friends and when we were driving home, we were sitting in the back. We were both a bit drunk, and he was constantly trying to steal my phone and read my texts and once he quickly grabbed my tight. And twice in this week, he came behind my back and tried to squeeze my hips. And today he had also written on my Facebook wall, out of nowhere. What do you think that is going on - do you think he wants us to get back together, does he just wants sex or am I overreacting about this?

[ Homework Help ] Open Question : help finding sources for satire project?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

so i'm doing this satire project on how the Internet has degraded people's linguistic and grammatical capabilities, how divorce has become more common and changed the typical "nuclear" family image, as well as how alternate realities (e.g., video games) have become a method of escapism. The problem is..... yeah, well I'm missing the three sources needed to write (I assumed it would be a little odd to directly make them within the satire). Any additional help is much appreciated, I'm currently looking myself. Thank you!! (and yes, I'm looking too!) :)))

[ Singles & Dating ] Open Question : Stay faithful, or move on? Help!?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

Since April me and my friend have pretty much fallen in love with each other. He told me a couple months ago that he loved me but he didn't want to go out because he was moving over the summer and didn't want to get serious just to end it in a couple of months. We always tried to plan hanging out but something always came up and we never got a chance but we talk to each other 24/7. Last week there was this party (he's a 9th grader one year older than me) and he showed up. We went to the parking lot and kissed (made out) for a really long time. And i seriously think (know) I love him. So this week I found out he's moving Saturday and he says he loves me more than anything and he's never felt this way about anyone/anything else. And i told him I was scared to lose him because I really want to be with him and that I wish there was some way he could wait for me the next 3 years of high school he has and he said if we keep talking as much as we do now then he probably will. And i told him not to say that because no matter how much we want to, it's sometime hard to control your feelings and you can't stop yourself from liking someone you really like (especially when your away from the person you "love") but he responded in telling me that I know he's not like other guys and because he loved me so much he can control his feelings toward other girls and stay true to his love for me.. I still have all 4 years of high school to go and I want to have as much fun as possible. BUT i also want to stay faithful to him if he can do the same for me. 3 years seems like a long time now but it'll fly by...I didn't include a lot but based off of wat I've said..would you guys wait if you were me? Would you trust him? And how can i keep the "relationship" alive? Thanks guys! I really need your help!!

[ Polls & Surveys ] Open Question : POLL: What would you do if your best friend suddenly told you he loved you?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

If your (opposite Gender) friend suddenly burt out that they are madly in love with you? what would you do? just out of interest...

[ Other - Society & Culture ] Open Question : What do you do when you know people don't like you?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

What do you when you know people don't like you--and you aren't really sure why? How do you act around them? Do you ignore them? Act like there's no issue there? (I mean, if they haven't confronted you and you don't know what their problem is, do you act kind and friendly or brush them off and essentially give them a reason not to like you?) And why are ADULTS still prone to cliquish behavior?

[ Adolescent ] Open Question : College son 19 with no sociol life and no job.?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

My 19 year old son goes to college but has decided to come home after the first year and attend local community college. He did fair with his grades but never really got into the college social scene. He is a good and respectful kid but he has no interest in a social life or getting a job. He had high school friends and occasionally did things but for the most part he never had a great social life in high school. He is taking one class over the summer and stays up all night on his computer and sleeps all day. He will pick up because we require it but he just has no incentive to do anything. I caught him still up at 6:00 am today on line and he has sleep all day. He has no friends and does not date. He is not bad looking and has had opportunities but never follows through. He says we are pressuring him and we should leave him alone. We told him that he didn't have to work but had to pick up the house, (which he does) and he had to join something, (church group, volunteer, or sports) which he agreed but has never done. Is he going to be a hermit? It's making me crazy I feel that he is so alone what should I do??? He says we are too strict and he is following all of our orders but I'm not sure what to do now.

[ Mental Health ] Open Question : I need help.. I am really depressed?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

I am 16 years old, and there are just a lot of little and big problems that have added up throughout the years that have gotten me to not be able to go on any longer... Like My grandpa was killed, my best friend died of cancer, my new best friend is moving to France, school is really stressful, and my dad hasn't been able to get a job in the past 2 years... i just feel like i don't exist all the time, and I don't want to exist, i don't feel like going anywhere, doing anything, not even smiling. My mom is really supportive, and she tries to help, but she doesn't really know what to do. She said time cures everything, but I just feel like time is making it worse. I finally opened up to a counselor @ my school and she was sooo nice, but she is leaving the school in after this year, and i just met her :( It just feel like everything in my life is going wrong, and even though I realize I don't have as big as problems as other people, I just feel terrible, and I don't know what to do, I just need someone to talk to, but there is no one. I feel like I have no friends, no purpose. All I want to do is curl up in a ball and cry for hours. Please help me... I don't know what to do.. and you guys are my last option :( thank you so much

[ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered ] Open Question : Does my friend have a crush on me?!?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

My friend knows I'm bi and I've known her for a year, she's really nice to me and always gives me hugs. She holds my hand all the time she even said a couple times "my boyfriend would be jealous" and I asked why and she said "because I'm holding your hand" and she always says "I love you" I don't know if she's bi because she's christan and it's like a sin in christianity or something. and she has a boyfriend but she always does those things when she's around me. She plays with my hair and always lifts my chin up and smiles at me afterwords. Sometimes she pulls me into her (like really close to her body.) I don't think she does it to anyone else. I haven't seen her do it to anyone else. Do you think she has a crush on me? Also I don't really mind if she does, it isn't awkward and I'm not upset I'm just curious.

[ Politics ] Open Question : Is Conservatism basically "real life trolling"?

[ Singles & Dating ] Open Question : I'm in a confusing relationship?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:41 PM PDT

You see, there was a school dance that I went to (I'm in Middle School). A girl wanted to slow dance with one of my friends, but my friend would only dance with her unless I asked someone to slow dance. I asked a girl who I've known for a bit, who I have a small crush on, and she says yes (which I was pretty glad about). We haven't really talked since, but our friends just keep talking about us. If I want to take a step up, and get out of this silence, what should I do?

Couple hrs later went to the bathroom again and the exact same thing happened. only showed up when i wiped the 1st time and never again. Yesterday there was no blood all day long. But after i got out of the shower yesterday morning not even an hr goes by and i felt this gush. ran to the bathroom and it was white milky discharge and all day long I kept getting a gush of discharge every time I would bent over. it was like having a period but without the blood. [ Homework Help ] Open Question : How do you solve a Newton's Law of Cooling problem having a variable ambient temperature?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:40 PM PDT

For example: The object in question is first 120 degrees F, and then 95 degrees after 10 minutes. The room is initially 60 degrees, but 50 degrees after 10 minutes. If it were a constant ambient temperature my differential equation would be dy/dt=k(y-60), but in this case the temperature of the room changes. Help please!

Re: Using classical music training principles to Improve Brain Power

Just read the bit on the CR blog. Sounds like more of the exact same
reasoning I'd mentioned previously. There's NO meaningful argument
for the "performance" approach to N-back, apart from some implied
assumption that pure level of performance, rather than stress (or any
other factor), is the source of whatever benefit N-back may provide.
Had a friend who once said (out of frustration with his musical
friends) "...for God's sake, NEVER give a musician anything that can
be practiced if you want to just go and do it." Another case of the
across the board assumption that a principle is always useful, or even
ideal simply because "it worked over there."
Maybe it's worth investigating, maybe not, but as it stands it's no
better than any other shot n the dark.

Re: Using classical music training principles to Improve Brain Power

Then again, why WOULD principles of muscular training apply to the
brain? This line of argument always sounds a little homespun to me...
like reason from horses to cars... they both require fuel, they both
do work, I have to direct them both to accomplish anything... and
since the horse runs better on oats, let's try putting oats in the
car. Kidding, of course, but reasoning like this is not uncommon, and
specialized fields of study exist specifically because such reasoning
doesn't always work.
Reasoning from one system to another is problematic, except as a
ground for investigative comparison.
In this case, there are undoubtedly similarities, especially in that
both systems respond to environmental stress. Problem is that's an
overly simplistic similarity - bacteria respond to stress, as do
plants. Given. But the complexities of how they respond to what
stress and in what amounts is nothing like obvious. The systems are
adapted to very different work. And then there are the assorted
spandrels they may carry with them, completely seperately.

Re: Jaeggi 2010 in the news

All hypotheses are underdetermined by their respective data. It's
better to keep an open mind at all times (but not to where your brain
falls out).

For me, it's never a question of feeling or faith. For all we know, it
could be a mix of both and neither. Or none of them. Etc.

It's never wrong to be unsatisfied by the current research.

You all know if you search your feelings (as Darth would have put it, I'll do a little bit of nearding myself) that it's just a matter of time before we have definite proof that n-backing improves the ability to solve "more complex" problems they way you want it. FSA COUNTY COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS START JUNE 15

06/01/2011 03:34 PM EDT

NEWS - Farm Service Agency
Public Affairs Staff
Room 308
200 4th St SW Fed Bldg
Huron, SD 57350

For immediate release

FSA COUNTY COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS START JUNE 15

HURON, SD, June 1, 2011 - Craig Schaunaman, State Executive Director of USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) in South Dakota announced that county committee election nominations begin June 15, 2011. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2011 deadline.

Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.

"County committee members are a valuable asset because they are local producers who participate in FSA programs themselves and have a direct connection to farmers and ranchers in the local area,” said Schaunaman.

Producers may nominate themselves or others as candidates. Organizations that represent minority and women farmers and ranchers may also nominate candidates. Nominees must participate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election, and reside in the local administrative area (LAA) in which the person is a candidate. To become a nominee, eligible individuals must sign form FSA-669A. The form and more information about county committee elections are available online at: www.fsa.usda.gov/elections.

“It is important that the county committee reflects the demographics and agricultural interests of the area these individuals represent,” Schaunaman said. “I strongly encourage all producers, including women, minority and beginning farmers and ranchers to participate in the nomination and election process,” he said.

County committees are comprised of three to five members elected by local producers. All newly elected county committee members and alternates will take office January 2, 2012.

Nomination forms must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on August 1, 2011.

For more information about county committees, please contact your local FSA office or go online at www.fsa.usda.gov.

Additional information about the acreage reporting process or programs administered by FSA may be obtained by contacting your local FSA office or on the web at www.fsa.usda.gov.

You're seriously trying to defend such a flawed study. I can barely
believe it. This, among other things, is why I don't pay much
attention to you. (There's a lot of worthless discussion on this ML,
and I use the mute button liberally.)

Yes, you've posted a bunch of research of questionable relevance, all
of which that I bothered to read was about correlations - correlations
existing *before* any intervention like dual n-back. Which is exactly
what I've never contested, and adds nothing to the question of whether
dual n-back increases IQ or just speed on BOMAT/RAPM, and your belief
that they prove it is sheer question-begging. I have said all this
before.

USDA Reminds Producers to File Adjusted Gross Income Consent Forms with the IRS

(COLLEGE STATION, TX) – June 1, 2011 - USDA Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Juan M. Garcia reminds producers that, in order to receive USDA program payments, each payment recipient must have an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) verification consent form on file with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

The consent form authorizes IRS to verify for FSA whether a payment recipient’s AGI meets the eligibility requirements for FSA programs. The form became a requirement for payment eligibility beginning with the 2009 crop year, however many program participants have not complied with this requirement.

"IRS and USDA reports show that, nationwide, FSA is still missing the required consent forms from many producers for 2009 and 2010," said Garcia. "In order to avoid an interruption of program payments, producers need to check their business records and turn these forms in to the IRS immediately if they have not done so already," he said.

IRS requires written consent from all individuals or legal entities before verification of the average AGI can be provided to USDA. Individuals must submit form CCC-927and legal entities must submit form CCC-928. Without these forms on file, producers will not receive USDA program payments.

Garcia further clarifies that these consent forms are required for payments received from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as well as those received through FSA. Completed forms must be returned to the IRS.

For more information on AGI eligibility requirements or the AGI verification process, contact your local FSA office.

No, but science proper doesn't deal with "causation". In fact, there
is no such thing as causation strictly speaking (if anyone wants to
argue this, let me take them to a pub and play billiards) - just
reliable correlations given a set equivalent initial conditions and
parameters. Less reliable correlations hint at a plurality of
influential factors.

As for conscientiousness, yes, that _certainly_ positively correlates
with continued involvement with a task. Lazy bums or underachievers
are a prime example of who don't possess conscientiousness and don't
engage in tasks that they may or may not be able to fulfill or
repeatedly engage in over extended periods of time. Furthermore,
conscientiousness positively correlates (significantly) with academic
performance - music training wouldn't be a far leap from this.

While we're on the topic, Marginal Revolution* has covered the press
release (at a different URL):

MR can drive a fair bit of traffic, so it's nice to see.

Re: Subconscious/Intuitive Processing.

You might answer this question by asking the following: When you do
DNB, do you see the sequence of positions/letters/colors laid out
before you, or do you "just know" when a match comes up?
