The high flooding of the Mississippi River carried debris from the new shores, plus active storm drains brought with it the litter, all flowing into eddies and corners of lagoons, such as this lake; a tributary to the Mississippi River off the Presidents Island causeway near Memphis, TN on Saturday, May 14. 2011. The 1,250 ton white crane and all other dock operations at Presidents Island's industrial areas are halted because the Mississippi River water level is 16 feet higher than normal at the International Port of Memphis near Memphis, TN, on Saturday, May 14. 2011. Barges and ships need the dolphins (thick brown cylindrical poles in the water) to stand more than the few feet they currently stand above the water. Usually they are 16" higher. At this height the lines that barges use to tie them to the dolphins can slip off, sending the vessel adrift. USDA Photos by Lance Cheung.
