Time Limits for Filing a Notice of Loss with Farm Service Agency

Indianapolis, June 17, 2011 – Julia A. Wickard, State Executive Director for the USDA's Farm Service Agency in Indiana reminds producers with crops covered under the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) they have a 15 calendar day time limit following a qualified loss event to file a notice of loss. For a notice of loss of prevented planting, it is 15 calendar days after the crop's final planting date.

NAP is designed to reduce financial losses that occur when natural disasters cause a catastrophic loss of production or prevented planting. This coverage is for eligible crops for which a catastrophic plan of insurance is not available through traditional crop insurance.

"Indiana has over 90 crops covered under a NAP policy. Unpredictable weather conditions have caused damage to planted acreages and have prevented crops from being planted. We want to ensure farmers are reminded about the need to timely file loss notices to facilitate any loss claims," said Wickard.

"We rely on American farmers to produce the food bounty for the kitchen or consumer table and we need to provide them with the tools to get the crop in the soil," said Wickard.

Failed acreage of crops planted under normal conditions but failed because of weather conditions, will still need to be reported before the disposition (destroying) of the crop occurs.
