$7 Million Available to Farmers to Implement Conservation Practices

About $7 million is available to eligible farmers, ranchers and private non-industrial forest landowners in 11 states to help implement conservation practices. The Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative helps producers initiate practices that will create clean water and air, reduce soil erosion and attract wildlife. Individual farmers, ranchers and private landowners in approved project areas can apply through their local NRCS office. Learn more.
Wasps May Be Answer to Eradicating Emerald Ash Borer

Wasps may be the answer to eradicating the emerald ash borer. Scientists are experimenting with the insects in several states based on results from China that showed three tiny species of wasps killed the borer. The wasps will be released in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan and Ohio. Last year the insects were released in Minnesota, West Virginia and Kentucky. Officials said it is too early to evaluate data to determine if the wasps have been successful. Read more (USA Today).

Dean Manthe is one of several farmers in Wisconsin and across the country who are building their own corn drying and storage facilities with the help of the Farm Service Agency. Flooded Vermont Farmers Look to Government for Relief

Parts of Vermont have received 600 percent more rain than normal for this time of year. With 19.94 inches of rain tallied for the months of April, May and June, along with a storm that flooded rivers, farmers are seeking government relief for the acres of damaged crops that lie under inches of water and mud. According to Bob Paquin, Farm Service Agency state director, federal aid is already coming in and he expects USDA to declare some or all of Vermont an agricultural disaster area. Dakota Flooding Takes Toll on Century-Old Farmland

Farmland more than 100 years old is the latest victim of flooding caused by the Missouri and Souris rivers in North Dakota and South Dakota. Family farmers in the area have installed thousands of sandbags and are running multiple sump pumps to save their homes and land. "There are five sump pumps running," said Jane Metzinger, whose family is preparing for the worst as their centurion farm becomes covered with water.
