FSA Announces Accepted CRP Contracts

(FARGO, N.D.) – June 23, 2011 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency accepted nearly 114,000 acres of North Dakota farmland into the Conservation Reserve Program during the most recent general signup period. That represents about half of the acres that were offered by North Dakota producers. Nationwide, 2,8 million acres of farmland were accepted into CRP during the 41^st general signup.

Aaron Krauter, State Executive Director of Farm Service Agency in North Dakota, is happy to see continued interest in the program. “CRP has proven itself over the last 25 years to be a great way to partner with producers here in North Dakota to protect environmentally sensitive land. We received 2,390 offers to put land into CRP, and we were able to accept 1,082 of those offers.”

The new CRP contracts become effective on October 1, but North Dakota will still see an overall reduction in the number of acres enrolled in CRP. That’s because more than 385,000 acres of existing CRP contracts are expiring this year, leaving about 2.38 million acres enrolled in the program.

With the decline in acreage enrolled in the program, Krauter wants to remind producers that there are still other options to enroll in CRP. “Even though the general signup period is over, there are still opportunities around the state to get land into CRP. There are several conservation priority areas around the state, and land that’s devoted to certain cover practices can be enrolled at any time,” Krauter said. Landowners that are interested in one of the continuous CRP practices should contact their local FSA office.
