FSA Working to Trim Costs
FARGO, N.D. – (May 27, 2011) – The Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency is making some changes to the way it interacts with its customers in North Dakota, according to State Executive Director Aaron Krauter. Perhaps the most noticeable change comes in the form of fewer mailings to customers and an increase in electronic communication.
“FSA is committed to supporting the great farmers and ranchers in North Dakota, but the reality is that we need to provide the same level of support with a smaller budget,” Krauter said. “We’re looking at all aspects of how we do business, but the first and easiest thing that we saw we could do is to reduce our printing and postage costs as much as possible.”
Because of the reduced budget, FSA offices will no longer mail maps for acreage reporting purposes to producers. Instead, producers can pick up their maps at their local FSA office, have their maps put on a USB storage device, or request that the maps be emailed. If a producer wants maps put on a USB storage device, it must be a new device in its original, unopened packaging. Krauter explained, “We have to strike a delicate balance between getting the data to our customers and making sure that our computer networks are safe from potential viruses.”
Producers will also see a reduction in the number of newsletters and announcements that are mailed during the year. A new electronic subscription service is being put into place that will allow farmers and ranchers to receive newsletters, program deadline reminders and other FSA information by email or as a text message to a mobile phone. Those interested in signing up for the electronic delivery service should contact their local FSA office. “This is an entirely voluntary thing,” Krauter said, “and I think it highlights the fact that we can reduce our costs but actually improve our level of service. With electronic notifications, we’ll be able to get program information to producers faster than we ever have before.”
