STATE ENERGY DATA RELEASE—June 3, 2011
State-level estimates of consumption, prices, and expenditures for total energy through 2009
State Energy Data System (SEDS) estimates for total energy, for data year 2009, are available at SEDS Updates. Data highlights include the following:
- U.S. total energy consumption equaled 94 quadrillion Btu in 2009, a 5% decrease from 2008. The top consuming States were Texas, which consumed 12% of U.S. energy; California, which consumed 8%; and Florida, which consumed 5%.
- The U.S. average price of total energy was $17 per million Btu in 2009, a 20% decrease from 2008. Transportation sector energy prices fell 30% from 2008 to 2009, industrial sector energy prices fell 23%, commercial sector energy prices fell 8%, and residential sector energy prices fell 4%.
- U.S. total energy expenditures equaled $1.1 trillion in 2009, a 25% decrease from 2008. The States with the largest expenditures were Texas, which accounted for 11% of U.S. energy expenditures; California, which accounted for 10%; and New York and Florida, which each accounted for 5%.
SEDS provides annual State-level estimates of energy consumption, prices, and expenditures by sector and energy source. A full set of State-level estimates for all fuels, all sectors, and all years through data year 2009 will be released by the end of June 2011.
