I am taking a college organic chemistry laboratory class. Today in lab we were given an unknown solid (crystal) organic substance to test in various ways. Then we were given 7 known substances to test as well to figure out which one of these our unknown was. Once we thought we figured out our unknown, we tested that known chemical in the exact same tests as we did with our unknown. We got all the same results. This obviously confirms they are the same substance (we did IR spectroscopy, for one.) But then our professor told us to MIX our known and unknown together and repeat all these tests again. That was very strange to me. Why would we do that once we had already confirmed that they are the same? It's redundant. And also, isn't it bad lab practice to mix an unknown with other substances just to test to see if they are the same? Even if this showed we didn't have the right identification of our unknown, it would give us less information than testing them side by side, and for another thing it's DANGEROUS. What if they weren't the same and they reacted together? Especially since in some tests we add heat (melting point)!! Am I right in thinking these things? Has anyone else done this or heard of these practices?

Hi! I've been learning about "Arabic" Music from this Non-Profit Org. that educates non-Arabic people about the Middle Eastern Culture (Dance, Music, Film, etc.). I've taken 6 out of 12 "Maqam" (Arabic Melodies) Classes (I dropped it b/c it was TOO Hard to understand.) & just recently finished taking "Rhythm & Dance" Classes. I LOVE playing the "Darbuka" (Drum/Tabla), but even tho' I didn't understand the Arabic Melodies I still love Arabic Music. HOWEVER, the problem w/ this Org. is that Most of the People (on staff) Listen to MOSTLY CLASSICAL Arabic Music (like Umm Kathoum, etc.). I, on the other hand, (being a Westerner) Love FUSION! So, what I want to know is how to identify these Arabic Musical Elements of CLASSICAL Music (such as Umm Kathoum) in a FUSION song. Example, people (Westerners) listen to Sting's "Desert Rose" & identify that as Arabic obviously b/c of Cheb Mami's Arabic style singing - BUT Is it just Cheb's singing? What about the Strings Solo right after Cheb says "Aman, Aman, Aman Ah-ha Oh"? Doesn't the Strings sound Arabic & How if they sound like they're just using 1/2 STEPS instead of MICRO-TONES? From listening to ARABIC CLASSICAL Music the Strings Tones or Melodies Don't Sound like these Strings on "Desert Rose". Plus, on the other hand, the track previous to "Desert Rose" - "Thousand Yrs." sounds Arabic too. I got a little bit of an idea of what Arabic Melodies (Classical) are supposed to sound like which they use A LOT of MICRO-TONES. I know Micro-Tones are SMALLER than Western's 1/2 Step (Theoretically Speaking), but I can't help hearing some Arabic influences on the Synth sound where when I played it on Keys it's just 1/2 steps (it wouldn't be Micro-Tonal b/c Keys have a FIXED Tuning) in "Thousand Yrs." as well. So, my Questions are: If anyone here feels the same that "Thousand Yrs." has that Middle Eastern sound AND (W/OUT Counting Cheb Mami singing) "Desert Rose" also having the same sound Then 1) What are the Musical Elements that give it an ARABIC Flavor? Or 1a) What are Fusion Songs such as this using or Taking From the Arabic CLASSICAL Music? 2) Is it the Rhythms being used (There are so many Maqsoum, Ayoub, Maqsmoothi, etc.)? 3) Are songs like Sting's using 1/2 Steps to give it that "Micro-Tonal" effect? I know they Don't sound LIKE the CLASSICAL Music (Kathoum), but I know there has to be some similarities. I'm open to any insights.

This story might be a little long. My freshman year in high school just ended so now I'm a Sophomore. Being older and more mature now, my cousin said I should find a high school sweetheart. Yesterday I went to the middle school to see one of my friends. While waiting for him to come out the building, I saw this attractive girl. I was going to go talk to her but her friends kept bothering her and then my friend finally came out. Today I found out her name and realized that she's the same girl I had a crush on when I was in 8th grade and she was in 7th. She look very different now. Anyway, turns out both my friend and my cousin know her so I got her number from my cousin and had my friend talk to her for me. Now she wants to walk back to the middle school so she could meet me. That's not the problem. The problem is that my uncle is coming from GA tomorrow and I can't really leave him and his family. Also, I don't know what I would say to her. I usually go out with girls that I know as friends first. So their easier to talk to. I never been in this situation before. I could probably slip away but what I say? Please help me and give me your opinions. Also, I won't text or call her just yet because she might think I'm a stalker or something.

my ex she is 25 and I we've been broken up for a year now we talk to each other and text. the one day she had her girl who is a friend over and they watched a movie after the movie she text me. Then one night she went to the bar with her girl friends from work and she text me when she was at the bar and if i didn't answer she would text again saying hello. She tells me everything like that her mom and real dad are getting back together and that she hates her mom. well 5months ago her step dad tryed to rape her she got out of there i was the first one she called i picked her up and i was rubbing her back and i was there for her.The day after that her and her real dad went to report the step dad to the police. Then the next day she went out west for a couple weeks and came back on march break to spend with her son. well 2 weeks after we got in a fight and i said mean stuff like she is just like her mom and that her son is going to hate her how she hates her mom and that she is a s lut. i didn't mean any of it. so its been about 4 months since we talked. the last text she send me was saying i want to be left alone by everyone.I text her alot of times saying sorry i left flowers and cholate at her place with letters telling her how much she means to me and how sorry i really am.I seen on her facebook all her closes friends from work she delete them all off her facebook. 2months she been staying at her grandma and grandpa's she told me that she is on drugs from the dr so im guessing she is depress. i send her a text a while ago and she hasn't said anything. Her aunt and my dad are really good friends well she told my dad that she quit her job and moved out west 2months ago to be with her ex and they are going back out and is going to stay out west for a year. I know last year in july she went down to see him for 2 weeks then in dec he came down for 3 weeks. She has a son who is 10 years old and her mom and dad have custody of her son so she can't take him out west with her. so why would she move there for a year without her son for an ex. p.s when me and her were dating she told me about her ex the one who she is going out with now that they went out for 5 years. He's 10 years old then her and the reason they broke up the first time was because he wanted to get married and have kids with her and she didn't want that and that he was on drugs. So he moved out west to get clean i guess i don't know if he is clean or what 1. Do you think she has feeling for me more then friends and maybe loves me? 2. why isn't she talking to me? 3. do you think i just need to give her space? 4. since her aunt said she is going back out with her ex then why didnt she call him first when she almost got raped? 5. why the hell would she move out west and leave her son? 6. do you think me and her have a connection? 7. why would she delete all her friends off of facebook 8. im not sure if she is depressed does it sound like she is? 9. did it sound like we were dating before the fight? 10.how old are you?

I am a 16 year old girl, and I am really close with one of my male friends. We are extremely close and we totally trust each other. We can talk about anything together, and we don't have to worry about being judged. Also, we have both confessed our mutual attraction. He's the only one that I've ever opened up to, and the only person that I have ever felt attracted to, and I know that he is attracted to me, too (he told me that he was attracted to me). Here's the problem: He has a girlfriend that he really likes. They have been going out for a few months, and they are having sex. He has told me how much he enjoys her company, and how he would be heart broken if she ever broke up with him (which she is planning to do at the end of the summer when she moves away to college...he knows that this is her plan). (I know this because they told me) ALSO, I told him that I could never be with him because I didn't want to ruin our friendship(but I lied...I really DO want to be with him). I said that because I don't want to mess up his relationship with his girlfriend because I know how happy they are together. So, I was wondering what I should do. Should I tell him how I really feel? Or should I wait until the end of the summer when his girlfriend is gone? Or should I just not tell him at all?

Girls, how would you react if a guy said this to you? I'm planning on asking the girl I like out before graduation. I'm going to do it tomorrow because it's the last week of school and I was going to say something like: " I know we don't know each other all that well....but, the thing is, I can't help but want to know more about you; I really like you and I think you're gorgeous both inside and out. I know this might be sudden, but I might not see you again after this and I know I'd regret it later if I let you get away now without telling you how I feel about you." The last thing I want to do is make it awkward for her; she probably won't be expecting this and I don't want to put pressure on her. So would asking her like this make it more or less awkward than if I asked her bluntly if she wants to go out with me? I have no intention of just saying "Be my girlfriend 'cause you're hot" or anything ridiculous like that. All I want to do is pretty much let her know I like her without making it sound awkward; that's my goal. I don't know if its relevant or not, but she's not the type of shallow person who would laugh in my face for saying this. I went to a temporary employment office and they told me that before they could even talk to me I had to upload my resume and once they looked at it, they would give me a call and set up an interview, etc. I went to their website and uploaded my resume using word 95 and when I tried to submit it, I got an error message. The message said error line 77 or something like that. What can I do?

hello, so to make it short... i only hanged out with this girl i met several times in a month, that's because it was finals time and the semester in college was ending. NOW...i wanted to keep in contact with her cus i like her. I've texted her some right after college, then been mostly facebooking her (just inbox). i tried takin it to the next level...or trying something new...calling. I called her twice (both one time each try) and she didnt answer. people are all different, so it may have been that she's busy, that she doesnt like me, that she likes me but she's shy, that she doesnt like having conversations on phone (which is what i think), or etc. Should i not contact her for a while to not creep her out? should i even bother to contact her throughout the summer if i like her? we live like an hr from each other now...im in an internship now. she will be goin to summer 2 to take classes. so wanted to ask her out before she left...but she didnt answer. so...should i just ask her out on facebook or just wait to see her till Fall semester? thankss
