Montana's record high wheat and barley yield results in no 2010 ACRE payments

Bozeman, July 15, 2011 - USDA Farm Service Agency Acting State Executive Director in Montana Dick Deschamps today announced that because of high yields Montana did not meet the state trigger for the 2010 Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program payments for acres of wheat, barley and oats.

"With the record high yields for wheat and barley crops and high state yields in oats, 2010 turned out to be a great year for many Montana farmers," Deschamps said. "Due to the high yields, no 2010 ACRE payments will be made for wheat, barley, and oats for Montana farmers enrolled in the ACRE program.”

Congress established ACRE to protect producers from farm market revenue declines. Payments are revenue-based and determined based on crop production and the National Average Market Price for covered commodities planted on the farm.

The 2010 state yields published by the National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS) for wheat was 41.1 bushels per acre, oats were 99 bushels per irrigated acre and 47 bushels per non-irrigated acre while barley averaged 88 bushels per irrigated acre and 49 bushels per non-irrigated acre.

Other 2010 ACRE state yields announced were the following: Flaxseed at 17 bushels per acre, Corn at 135 bushels per acre, Small Chickpeas at 1,000 lbs. per acre, Large Chickpeas at 540 lbs. per acre, Dry Peas at 1,880 lbs. per acre, Safflower at 820 lbs. per acre, Mustard at 780 lbs. per acre and Lentils at 1,290 lbs. per acre.

States that meet the revenue triggers for other commodities will be determined after the 2010-2011 marketing year average prices are published by the NASS.

The scheduled publishing dates for 2010 National Average Market Prices for other crops are as follows:
Corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, dry peas, and lentils – Oct. 1, 2011; Large chickpeas, small chickpeas, sunflower seed, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed, rapeseed, safflower and crambe – Dec. 1, 2011.
