Conservation Reserve Program: Habitat Buffer for Upland Birds Initiative

(Denver/Colorado), June 6, 2011 – Colorado has been approved for 610 acres for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Habitat Buffer for Upland Birds Initiative, according to Farm Service Agency (FSA) State Executive Director SED, Trudy Kareus. This program is aimed at increasing the habitat for the northern bobwhite quail and other grassland dependent birds in areas bordering agricultural fields. FSA estimates that the nesting and brood-rearing cover created by the initiative will increase bobwhite numbers by over 1 million birds annually nation-wide. Planted buffers will also benefit reptiles, amphibians, aquatic species, and upland birds, many of which are being considered for listing as endangered species. In addition, the initiative will reduce soil erosion and protect water quality by trapping field sediments and nutrients.

Because the initiative in Colorado is limited to 610 acres, enrollment is targeted to those areas that have the greatest potential to restore bobwhite habitat. Applicants must satisfy the basic eligibility and cropping history criteria for CRP.

According to Kareus, the approved counties for this initiative are; Logan, Morgan, Washington, Sedgwick, Phillips, Yuma, Pueblo, Crowley, Otero, Bent, Prowers, Baca, Weld, Kit Carson, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Las Animas Counties. Producers who are interested in the "Habitat Buffer for Upland Birds Initiative" should contact their County FSA Office for more information or visit the website at www.fsa.usda.gov/co
