I briefly touched on the subject of self-directed evolution a while
ago here:

Since the beginning of technology and language this has been the case
with exponential increase.Today, this can be seen in the development
of more sophisticated technologies and (computer, symbolic, etc.)
languages. N-back is just one more factor to be taken into account,
that is, where it actually _does_ have an effect, not where it
doesn't. In effect, it is a part of a long-term trend of human
behavior.

Either one is aware of this being the case or one isn't...
