Guest Editorial by Dick Deschamps, USDA Farm Service Agency Acting Montana Executive Director: Giving Back Brings Us Together
As the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the U.S. draws near we are all remembering where we were ten years ago. But let’s also take stock of where we are today.
Recently the U.S. Department of Agriculture employees joined with other federal departments and with farmers, ranchers and local businesses to collect over 2 million pounds of food for the hungry among us. This food drive was a small gesture of our commitment to those we serve around the nation.
In Montana alone, more than 6,369 pounds of food were brought to USDA offices and given to food banks for Montana families and individuals. Despite being confronted every day by a litany of “bad news” both here and abroad, this generosity of spirit shows that there is still much to be celebrated when people of goodwill come together to serve their fellow citizens.
As a global community, we still mourn the 2,977 private citizens from nearly 100 countries who were victims of the heinous attack on September 11, 2001. In addition New York lost many selfless emergency workers who sacrificed their lives to help others live, including 343 firefighters, 60 police officers and 8 private emergency medical technicians. Lives are still being sacrificed in Iraq and Afghanistan defending Americans as well as other citizens of all nations against terrorism.
The many tons of food we just gathered will never match the sacrifice made by those first responders who went into the towers and didn’t come out, or by the soldier who never left the battlefield. But we can remain dedicated to helping others in the same spirit that drove them to their own public service calling. In every rural community, every city, every town and every place in between, we can continue to reach out to help those less fortunate. That’s what brings us together as members of the global community.
